01When to go
The year in the Delta follows the water.
The Delta is fed by rain that falls hundreds of kilometres away and months before. By the time the flood peaks, the rest of Botswana is dry, so everything that needs water comes to it.
02Through the year
What the water does in each season.
November to March
Rain falls far to the north, on the highlands of Angola.
The mokoro goes out, as it does all year. The motorboat runs from May to October, depending on the rain in Angola.
March and April
The water crosses Namibia and reaches the top of the Delta.
The mokoro goes out. The motorboat starts in May, depending on the rain in Angola.
May
It spreads into the fan, channel by channel, island by island.
The mokoro goes out, and the motorboat starts. It runs from May to October, depending on the rain in Angola.
July and August
The water is at its highest, and the floodplains are full.
The mokoro and the motorboat both go out.
September
The water begins to fall back, and the floodplains open again.
The mokoro goes out, and the motorboat runs to October, depending on the rain in Angola.
03On the water
The mokoro goes out all year.
One boat, one guide and no engine. The motorboat runs from May to October, depending on the rain in Angola, down the open channels where the water runs deeper.
Botswana winters are cold at dawn. Every villa has a wood burner and heating for the winter mornings, and the pool is temperature controlled. The day has no fixed schedule: the programme is composed for each guest.
